Over Christmas break, when I was in Lawrenceburg my family held the great chili tasteoff. This included the three main chili establishments: Empress, Skyline, and Gold Star. The taste test consisted of coneys and three ways (chili over spaghetti with cheese on top aka Cincinnati chili). After rainbow sherbert to clear the palate between samples, I chose sample 3 as the best. And the winner was Skyline! However, the majority voted for Gold Star as the best out of the three.
We then moved onto the three ways.
Sample 1 (Empress) was quite spicy and had much more meat in it than the rest. My husband deemed it the best because he liked the spiciness. Sample 2 (Gold Star) has softer spaghetti, but has a strange after taste that left most of us grimacing and reaching for our water or sorbet. Sample 3 was the favorite of most and once again this was Skyline. Skyline has a cinnamon taste to it and a good balance of sauce and meat.
Overall, after ranking everyone's choices Skyline came out on top as the best Chili, but you can still get a good coney from Gold Star. Now we have to figure out what we'll taste test next...
